They are native to Norway, Yugoslavia, France, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Belarus, Switzerland, Bulgaria, Greece, Russia, Romania, Hungary, Estonia, Kyrgyzstan, Albania, Poland, Georgia, Czech Republic, Finland, Afghanistan, Belgium, Austria, Azerbaijan, Iran, Eastern North America, Tajikistan, Armenia, Lithuania, Germany, and Latvia. They have simple, broad leaves and green flowers. Flowers are visited by Dasysyrphus venustus, Epistrophe nitidicollis, Volucella inflata, and Chalcosyrphus nemorum. Individuals can grow to 20 m.
