Description of Calciosolenia
provided by BioPedia
Coccolithophorids, possibly biflagellate, possessing cylindrical coccospheres terminating at each end with a number of pole spines; monomorphic body coccoliths, rhomboliths (syn.: scapholiths), rhombic in shape. Marine, planktonic, generally in warmer waters. The shape and total length (up to 90 µm) of coccosphere may allow the cell to maintain a position transverse to the direction of incident light, thus maximising the photosynthetic efficiency of the lateral chloroplasts.
