The yellow-headed brushfinch (Atlapetes flaviceps) is a Near Threatened species of bird in the American sparrow family, Passerellidae. It is endemic to Colombia. The common name is a semi-literal translation of the scientific name, with Atlapetes referring to the brushfinch genus, and flaviceps meaning "yellow-headed".
This species has a yellow to dark olive head. The throat, chin, malar streak, lores, eye-ring, and ear patch are bright yellow in any case. The rest of the plumage is yellow with dark olive upperparts, wing and tail. The variation in the head color is not well explained, but it is likely that the olive-headed individuals are females and/or immature birds.[2]
It is sometimes still referred to by its obsolete common name, olive-headed brushfinch. That name is the result of an interesting error. A. flaviceps occurs in a very limited range, and is rare. Until the 1980s, it was known only from the two specimens collected on October 24 and 25, 1911, in the Toché River valley, and two additional specimens collected in 1942. Though the exact amount and brightness was variable in the few specimens, the bright yellow head of these birds was noted. It did not receive a standardized common name due to its rarity however, being only known to a few ornithologists for which the scientific name was sufficient. That name, however, duly referenced the striking color of the type specimen, an adult male.[2]
In 1987, the first photograph of a living A. flaviceps was published. It showed a bird with very little yellow on the head, and altogether gave the impression that this species had a mainly dusky olive head. Widely distributed in a popular field guide,[3] this photo led to the misleading common name, in use since the mid-20th century, becoming firmly established.[2]
When the species was rediscovered at the type locality in 1989, it was noted that some birds had the mainly dusky olive head seen in the photograph. But as far as can be told, at least the adult males have the largely bright yellow head that was referenced in the original description of this species. Thus, BirdLife International chose the common name "yellow-headed brushfinch" in 1992, and the AOU eventually followed suit.[2]
This bird was encountered in the La Plata Vieja Valley in Huila Department in 1967, but the only recent records are from the upper Coello River basin in Tolima Department (the Toché River is one of the main tributaries of the Coello River). Namely, it is found between 1,000 and 2,500 meters ASL in Cajamarca, Ibagué and Roncesvalles and perhaps Rovira municipalities, in the upper reaches of the Anaime, Cocora, Combeima and Toché river valleys.[4]
It remains locally common in thick secondary vegetation and degraded forest, bordering gallery forest and arracacha (Arracacia xanthorriza) and granadilla (Passiflora species) plantations. The yellow-headed brush finch has been observed to take part in mixed-species feeding flocks together with the common bush-tanager (Chlorospingus ophthalmicus), white-throated tyrannulet (Mecocerculus leucophrys), golden-fronted whitestart (Myioborus ornatus), blue-and-black tanager (Tangara vassorii), blue-capped tanager (Thraupis cyanocephala) and fawn-breasted tanager (Pipraeidea melanonota). It is threatened by habitat loss; most areas in the inter-Andean valleys of Colombia have already been converted to agricultural land. The total population is believed to be at least 250 but not more than 1,000 adult birds.[5]

El atlapetes cabecigualdo o gorrión montés de anteojos (Atlapetes flaviceps) es una especie de ave paseriforme de la familia Passerellidae endémica de Colombia.
Cabeza color amarillo a oliváceo. Garganta, barbilla, el anillo del ojo, el oído son siempre de color amarillo brillante. El resto del plumaje es de color amarillo oscuro con las caras superiores de las alas y la cola color oliva oscuro.[3] Mide en promedio 18 cm de longitud.[4]
En 1987 fue publicada la primera fotografía de un ejemplar vivo de esta especie, que fue ampliamente distribuida.[5][3] Cuando la especie fue redescubierta en la localidad tipo en 1989, se observó que algunas aves tenían la cabeza de olivácea (como se ve en la fotografía), pero, los machos adultos tienen la cabeza amarilla, en gran parte, como en la descripción original de esta especie.[3]
Ha sido encontrado en el valle del río La Plata en el departamento del Huila en 1967 y más recientemente en la cuenca del río Coello, en el departamento del Tolima, en Juntas, Roncesvalles y el río Toche, entre los 1.300 y 2.400 m de altitud.[6][7]
Localmente común en los límites del bosque de galería, en la espesa vegetación secundaria y bosques degradados, matorrales y plantaciones de arracacha (Arracacia xanthorriza) y granadilla (Passiflora ligularis). Ha sido observado buscando alimento en bandas con otras especies de pájaros. Está amenazado por pérdida de hábitat. Su población total se calcula en cerca de mil adultos.[7]

Dette er ein kjerrsporv med relativt stort hovud, kort nebb, lang hale som kan virke «fliste», dei sentrale halefjørene er lengere enn dei ytre. Kroppslengda er ca. 17 centimeter. Øvre delar av hovudet er gult med varierande grad av oliven fargeskjær. Undersida medrekna strupe og bryst er klår gul, oversida med venger er mørk olivenfarga. Både nebbet, beina og auga er mørke. Kjønna er like, men juvenile fuglar har sterkt skjær av oliven på hovud, bryst og flankar.[1]
Utbreiingsområdet har vore lite kjent. Det er no skildra som avgrensa til to område. Det eine er isolert i sørvest langs vestsida av den vestre fjellkjeda av Andes, ved og sør før byen Cali i Valle del Cauca og litt inn i Cauca. Det andre er langs begge sidene av den sentrale kjeda, rett nord for byen Manizales i Caldas, og vidare sørover i austskråninga av sentrale Andes mot Magdalenadalen i Tolima og lengst sør inn i Cauca-departementet med ein observasjon i Huila-departementet.[2] Habitata er i kjerrskog inn mot rydda område, plantasjar og hagar langs fjellskråningane. Dei kan òg leve i underskogen i fuktig, høgtliggande skog. Høgdnivåer er vanlegvis i bandet 1900-2440 moh.[1]
Føda er insekt, frø og mindre frukter. Gulhovudkjerrsporvar har vore observerte i å beite i fleirartsflokkar saman med artar av tanagarar og andre som kvitstrupetyrannulett, Mecocerculus leucophrys og gulpannekvitstjert, Myioborus ornatus.[1]
Den totale populasjonen er trudd å vere minst 250 vaksne individ, men ikkje meir enn 1000 modne fuglar eller 1500 individ totalt. Trugsmåla mot arten er avskoging og landbruk.[3]

Gulhuvad snårsparv[2] (Atlapetes flaviceps) är en starkt hotad sydamerikansk tätting i familjen amerikanska sparvar.[3]
Gulhuvad snårsparv är en 17 centimeter lång olivgul sparv som trivs i undervegetation. Huvudet är gult med en tydlig gul tygel, ögonring och svagt ögonbrynsstreck. Ovansidan är mörkt olivgrön och undersidan gul. Mängden gult på huvudet varierar av oförklarlig anledning. Lätet består av några diskanta hesa gnissliga toner följda av ett flöde snabbare toner.[1]
Fågeln förekommer i centrala Andernas östra sluttning i Colombia. Den har påträffats en gång i dalen La Plata Vieja i Huila. Typexemplaren insamlades i Tochedalen i Tolima där den fortfarande är relativt vanlig.[1] Den behandlas som monotypisk, det vill säga att den inte delas in i några underarter.
Arten verkar har anpassat sig väl till skogsområden som har degraderats på grund av avverkning. Den finns framför allt i tät ungskog där klängväxter och återstående träd förekommer men också i buskiga och igenvuxna bönfält på 1300 till 2500 meters höjd över havet. Den lever av små frukter, insekter och frön. Ungfåglar har setts i juni och adulta fåglar som samlar bomaterial i oktober.[1][4]
Beståndet beräknas till endast till 250-1000 individer. Den misstänks minska på grund av habitatförlust. På grund av detta och dess begränsade utbredningsområde kategoriserar internationella naturvårdsunionen IUCN gulhuvad snårsparv som starkt hotad.[1]
