Distinguished from all other Rasbora species by its distinctive markings and coloration. It differs from its closest congener, Rasbora kalochroma in having a vertically oval dark blotch (versus absence of such a blotch) at the caudal base and lacking (vs. having) a well-defined blackish band across the middle of the caudal fin (Re. 13217).

Etymology

The fish is named in honor of Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat.[2]
