The hooded dotterel or hooded plover[1] (Thinornis cucullatus) is a species of bird in the family Charadriidae. It is endemic to southern Australia, where it inhabits ocean beaches and subcoastal lagoons. There are two recognised subspecies which form isolated eastern and western populations. The eastern subspecies is of greater conservation concern, with listings varying from Vulnerable in South Australia and Victoria to Critically Endangered in New South Wales.

Taxonomy

The hooded dotterel was placed in genus Charadrius but in the early 2000s it was reclassified into the genus Thinornis, along with shore plover (Thinornis novaeseelandiae).[3][4] In 2000 the number of mature individuals was estimated at 7,000.[3] Alternative common names include: hooded plover, hoody, pluvier à camail (in French), kappenregenpfeifer (in German), and chorlito encapuchado (in Spanish).[4]

Subspecies

Two subspecies of the hooded dotterel are now recognised.[3]

Description

A breeding pair

The hooded dotterel is medium in size for a plover, stocky, and pale in colour. Its length is 190 to 230 mm (7.5–9.1 in) and its wing-span 230 to 440 mm (9.1–17.3 in). It has a black hood and throat with a white collar. Its red bill has a black tip. It has a red eye ring and orange legs.[10] Underparts are white. Males and females are similar. Adults and juveniles are similar except the juveniles do not have the black head and hindneck, which are instead a sandy brown.[11]

Behaviour

Eggs

A clutch of 1–3 eggs is laid from August to March, which includes also the peak of the Austral summer tourist season in its range and it is thereby heavily impacted by human activities.[3][12] The eggs are a matte beige or cream colour heavily sprinkled with dark brown and lavender markings, especially at the larger end of the egg. Pyriform in shape, they measure 37 mm × 27 mm (1.46 in × 1.06 in).[13] Eggs hatch in about 30 days.[13] The eastern population eats a variety of invertebrates but little is known of the diet of the western population.[3][12] Specifically it eats insects, bivalves, and sandhoppers. It is usually seen in pairs or small groups near the water. For breeding it will dig a shallow scrape in sand or gravel above high-water mark and line it with pebbles, seaweed, and other debris.[11] Males and females spend equal amounts of time incubating the eggs, although males tend to incubate more at night.[14]

Threats

The population of hooded dotterels has declined in eastern Australia as a result of disturbance by people, dogs, cats and horses, as well as predation by silver gulls (Larus novaehollandiae), ravens (Corvus spp) and introduced foxes.[3][12] Fox predation is a major threat to the western subspecies.

Distribution and habitat

Its natural habitats are freshwater lakes, freshwater marshes, coastal saline lagoons, and sandy beaches. Heavy populations are found on beaches with seaweed and dunes. It is threatened by habitat loss because of its small population and limited native range. It is a non-migratory inhabitant of coastal and subcoastal Western Australia, South Australia, New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania, and is a vagrant in Queensland.

Taxonomía

El chorlito encapuchado se colocó en el género Charadrius pero en la década de 2000 fue reclasificado en el género Thinornis, junto con Thinornis novaeseelandiae. En el año 2000, el número de individuos maduros se estimó en 7.000.

El chorlito encapuchado es de tamaño medio para un chorlito, rechoncho y su dorso es gris claro. Su longitud es de 190-230 mm y la envergadura de sus alas e de 230-440 mm. Cuenta con un capuchón negro y la garganta con un collar blanco. Su pico rojo tiene una punta de color negro. Tiene un anillo ocular rojo y las patas anaranjadas. Las partes inferiores son blancas. Los machos y las hembras son similares. Los adultos y jóvenes son similares, excepto los menores que no tienen la cabeza negra y la parte posterior del cuello, que es de color marrón claro.

Comportamiento

La puesta de 1-3 huevos se efectúa entre agosto y marzo, que es también el pico de la temporada turística de verano en su área de distribución y por tanto es fuertemente impactada por las actividades humanas. Los huevos son de color beige mate o color crema fuertemente salpicados de manchas marrones oscuras y lavanda, especialmente en el extremo más grande del huevo. El huevo es piriforme y mide 37 mm × 27 mm . Se alimentan de insectos, bivalvos y crustáceos. Por lo general se ven en parejas o en pequeños grupos cerca del agua. Para la cría cava un hueco superficial en la arena o grava encima de la marca de agua alta y la línea de piedras, algas y otros restos.

Distribución y hábitat

Sus hábitats naturales son los lagos de agua dulce, marismas, salinas costeras, lagunas y playas arenosas. Importantes poblaciones se observan en playas con algas y dunas. La especie esta amenazada por pérdida de hábitat debido a lo reducido de su población y área de distribución natural. Se encuentra en las costas y sublitoral de Australia Occidental, Australia del Sur, Nueva Gales del Sur, Victoria y Tasmania, y es un vagabundo en Queensland. La depredación por el zorro es una gran amenaza para la subespecie occidental.

Vogels

De zwartkopplevier (Thinornis cucullatus) is een vogel uit de familie van de kieviten en plevieren (Charadriidae). Het is een kwetsbare endemische soort in Australië. De vogel werd in 1818 door Louis Jean Pierre Vieillot geldig beschreven.

Kenmerken

De vogel is 19 tot 23 cm lang, gemiddeld 2 cm langer dan de bontbekplevier uit Europa. De vogel heeft relatief korten poten. Van boven is de vogel zwart, met een onderbroken donkere band richting de borst. Het zwart op de rug gaat geleidelijk over in grijs. De kop is ook zwart met achter op de nek een witte vlek. De borst en de buik zijn wit. Opvallend is een rode ring rond het oog. De snavel is oranjerood met een zwarte punt en de poten zijn dof oranje-roze. Er is geen verschil tussen de seksen in verenkleed.[2]

Verspreiding en leefgebied

Deze soort is endemisch in zuidelijk Australië. Het belangrijkste leefgebied wordt gevormd door zandige stranden aan de zuidkust met plakkaten aangespoeld zeewier. In West-Australië wordt de vogel ook waargenomen langs zoutmeren in het binnenland. Bij voorkeur broedt de vogel ook op vlakke zandstranden.[1]

Status

De grootte van de populatie werd in 2016 door BirdLife International geschat op 7000 volwassen individuen en de populatie-aantallen nemen af .Het broedgebied wordt aangetast door strandrecreatie, loslopende honden en dagjesmensen die met terreinauto's over de stranden rijden waardoor verstoring optreedt en dientengevolge het broedsucces laag blijft. Loslopend vee is om dezelfde reden een probleem. Om deze redenen staat deze soort als kwetsbaar op de Rode Lijst van de IUCN.[1]

Svarthuvad pipare[2] (Thinornis cucullatus) är en fåtalig fågel i familjen pipare inom ordningen vadarfåglar som enbart förekommer i Australien.[3]

Utseende och läte

Svarthuvad pipare är en medelstor (19-21 cm) pipare med svart huvud, vit hancke och svart skulderfläck. Resten av undersidan är vit, ovansidan ljusgrå. Näbben är röd med svart spets och kring ögat syns en röd ögonring. Ungfågeln är mycket blek med sandbrun hjässa, örontäckare och blekgula ben. Lätet är ett kort och pipigt "peet-peet" eller ett skällande "fow-fow".[4]

Taxonomi

Den beskrevs av Gmelin 1789 under det vetenskapliga namnet Charadrius rubricollis men idag placeras den i släktet Thinornis tillsammans med chathampipare. Sentida studier har också visat att artepitetet ska vara cucullatus vilket var vad Vieillot använde för att beskriva taxonet 1818, varför dess vetenskapliga namn idag är Thinornis cucullatus, men många källor anger fortfarande Thinornis rubricollis.[5] Vissa auktoriteter, som IUCN och BirdLife International, delar upp arten i två underarter, den östra T. r. rubricollis och den västra T. r. tregellasi men detta stöds inte av exempelvis Clements et al. 2012.[1][3][6]

Utbredning och status

Fågeln förekommer utmed kusterna av södra Australien, Tasmanien och på öar i Bass-sundet.[3] IUCN kategoriserar arten som sårbar (VU).[1]

Levnadssätt

Fågeln häckar på sandstränder men besöker utanför häckningstid även saltsjöar. Den lägger två till tre fläckiga beigefärgade ägg i en uppskrapad grop i marken.[4]

ズグロチドリ(頭黒鵆、頭黒千鳥、Thinornis cucullatus[1])とは、チドリ目チドリ科に分類される鳥類。オーストラリアに生息する、黒い頭部が特徴の小型[2]~中型[3]のチドリ類である。

名称[編集]

英語ではHooded Plover[2][3][4]またはHooded Dotterel[2]と呼ばれる。

形態[編集]

全長19-23cm[2][4]。 ずんぐりしている[2]。 黒い頭巾(頭頂と喉[2][4][3] と黒い肩掛けを持つ[3]。アイリングと嘴は赤く、嘴の先は黒い[4]。後頸、胸の側、背は地味な灰色味がかった茶色[4]。成鳥はほかのどんな渉禽類よりも白い後襟(後頸[3])が目立つ[2]ミユビシギは本種によく似るが、白い後襟を欠き、嘴と脚が黒く、肩は暗色である[2]

幼鳥は全体的により地味で、成鳥では黒色である頭巾、耳当て、肩が砂色がかった茶色となっている[4][3]。また微かにスカラップ形の砂色がかった黒い背と地味な黄味がかった脚をもつ[3][2]。「下襟」は汚灰色[2][11]

飛翔時は、太い白色の翼帯、また尾と腰が暗色で白く縁どられていることが観察できる[3][4]

生態[編集]

本種の卵。

生息環境は海藻漂着物に富んだ幅広い砂浜、または砂丘に隣接した原野や雑草の多い岩棚岩礁で、時折干潟にみられる[2]。また、沿岸の湖沼西オーストラリア内陸部の塩湖でもみられる[4]

番、家族、冬季のより大きな群れは漂着物や消えかかる波のふちをうろうろしている[2]。観察者に背を向け、足跡の上で蹲る[2]

短く甲高い鳴き声で、'peet-peet...'[3][2]、'pee-oo'[4]または'prip, prip'[4]と鳴く。または'fow-fow'と吠える[3]。 飛翔時は、'kew kew'と吠える[2]

繁殖期は9月から翌1月[2]。 巣は、砂の上に浅く掘って作られ、2-3個の汚れた淡黄色の卵を産む[3][2]。しばしば海岸漂着物の近くに産む[2]

分布[編集]

定着性(留鳥[4][2]オーストラリア固有種[4]危急種[4]

普通、タスマニア南オーストラリアオーストラリア南東部の砂浜、そして西オーストラリア南部の塩湖にみられ、東部の塩湖では見られない[3][2]。南部の砂浜では稀(~局地的によく見られる)、西部の塩湖では季節的な渡り鳥として見られ、喧騒に対して脆弱で、ニューサウスウェールズでは危機に瀕している[3]

より詳細には、適した生息地はおよそジャービス湾ニューサウスウェールズ)から、南はバス海峡を通ってタスマニア(主要な生息地)、西は南オーストラリアグレートオーストラリア湾の海岸線までにとどまる。西オーストラリアでは海岸に沿って、西はIsraelite Bayから北はジュリアンベイ(英語版)まで分布し、偶発的Abrolhosシャーク湾で見られることもある。バーリー湖のような内陸の塩湖、そして南は南オーストラリアで見られる[2]
