Poorland Flatsedge is native to U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, the contiguous United States, Rio de Janeiro, Tocantins, Piauí, Pantanal, Goiás, Roraima, Cerrado, Alagoas, São Paulo, Sergipe, Minas Gerais, Pará, Rio Grande do Norte, Bahia, Espirito Santo, Mato Grosso do Sul, Amazônia, Caatinga, Acre (Brazil), Maranhao, Amapá, Distrito Federal, Amazônia, Pernambuco, Rondônia, Paraíba, Mato Grosso, Ceará, and Mata Atlântica. It has simple, broad leaves and green flowers. It is a photoautotroph. Individuals can grow to 1 feet.
