Pistia stratiotes (Water Lettuce) is a species of perennial herb in the family Araceae. It has a self-supporting growth form. It is associated with freshwater habitat. Water Lettuce is native to the contiguous United States, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plain (AGCP), Middle America, South America, Maranhao, Alagoas, Rio Grande do Norte, Amapá, Cerrado, Pantanal, Mato Grosso do Sul, Bahia, Mato Grosso, Pará, Minas Gerais, Paraná, São Paulo, Sergipe, Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Sul, Mata Atlântica, Acre (Brazil), Ceará, Santa Catarina, Amazônia, Amazônia, Rio de Janeiro, Goiás, Piauí, Espirito Santo, Caatinga, and Paraíba. It has simple, broad leaves. It is a photoautotroph. Individuals can grow to 0.2 m.
