Der Albertzwergkauz (Glaucidium albertinum, Syn.: Taenioglaux albertinum), auch Albert-Sperlingskauz genannt^[1], ist eine Vogelart aus der Familie der Eigentlichen Eulen (Strigidae).^[2]

Er ist dem Kap-Sperlingskauz sehr ähnlich und wurde zeitweise mit diesem zusammengefasst.^[3]

Er kommt in der Demokratischen Republik Kongo und in Ruanda (Nyungwe-Wald) vor.

Das Verbreitungsgebiet umfasst ein kleines Waldgebiet im Albert-Graben (Albertine Rift) etwa in 2000 m Höhe.^[4][5][6]

Beschreibung

Der Albertzwergkauz ist etwa 20 cm groß und wiegt um die 73 g. Der Kopf ist relativ groß ohne sichtbare Ohrbüschel. Die Oberseite ist kastanienbraun mit cremefarbener Pünktelung an Stirn, Scheitel und Nacken, die Flügeldecken haben cremefarbene Binden. Die Unterseite ist hell bis weiß mit dunklen Flecken, insbesondere an den Flanken. Der Schwanz ist braun mit großen weißen Flecken, die Augen sind blass gelb.^[7][4]

Vom Kap-Sperlingskauz unterscheidet er sich durch die Pünktelung und die ziemlich einfarbige Rückenfiederung.^[5]

Lebensweise

Zu Nahrung und Brutzeit liegen keine Angaben vor.^[4]

Gefährdungssituation

Die Albertzwergkauz gilt als gefährdet (vulnerable).^[8]

The Albertine owlet (Glaucidium albertinum) is a small species of small owl in the family Strigidae, native to the Albertine Rift montane forests.

Taxonomy

Some authorities include the Albertine owlet as a subspecies of the African barred owlet, but others, including Birdlife, treat it as a separate species.^[1]

Description

The Albertine owlet is very similar to the African barred owlet (Glaucidium capense) and is a small, large-headed owl with no "ear-tufts". The head is heavily spotted with whitish flecks, the upper parts are maroon-brown and the mantle and back are not barred. The chin, throat and upper breasts are maroon with broad creamy bars, and the rest of the underparts are off-white with dark chestnut spots, mainly on the flanks. The tail is brown with large white spots. The eyes are pale yellow. The body length is 20 cm (7.9 in).^[3]

Distribution and habitat

The Albertine owlet is known from just a few specimens, two were collected in the Itombwe Mountains (two specimens) and two more in forest west of Lake Edward at 1,100 m (3,600 ft) in altitude in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, as well as one in Nyungwe Forest in western Rwanda. There has also been a sight record from Kahuzi-Biéga National Park, west of Lake Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).^[1]

The Albertine owlet occurs in very open montane forest and its ecotone where there are many clearings and a dense undergrowth. It probably occurs at elevations of up to 2,500 m (8,200 ft).^[4]

Behaviour

Little is known about the behaviour of the Albertine owlet. The stomach of one of the specimens contained a beetle and a grasshopper.^[5]

Conservation status

Deforestation and forest degradation are the most likely threats within the range of the Albertine owlet. The forest in the Itombwe Mountains and Kahuzi-Biéga National Park is under increasing pressure from agricultural clearance and grazing, timber cutting, mining and hunting. The range lies within a conflict-ridden region with thousands of refugees in camps, though this also seems to have resulted in outward emigration, leaving areas depopulated as well. More needs to be known about the biology and status of this taxon.^[4]

La Chevêchette de Prigogine (Glaucidium albertinum), aussi connue en tant que Chevêchette du Graben, est une espèce d'oiseaux de la famille des Strigidae, autrefois considérée comme une sous-espèce de la Chevêchette du Cap (G. capense).

Vogels

Prigogines dwerguil (Glaucidium albertinum) is een vogel uit de familie van de uilen. De Nederlandse naam verwijst naar de Belgische ornitholoog Alexandre Prigogine die de vogel in 1983 beschreef.^[2] Het is een zeer zeldzame en daarom kwetsbare vogelsoort uit de bergbossen tussen Congo-Kinshasa en noordelijk Rwanda.

Kenmerken

De vogel is 20 cm lang, het is een kleine uil met een relatief grote, ronde kop zonder "oortjes". De vogel is overwegend donkerbruin met lichte stippels, vooral op de kop en heeft lichte wenkbrauwen. Op de borst zitten donkere dwarsstrepen en de buik en de flanken zijn licht met grove, donkere stippels.^[3]

Verspreiding en leefgebied

Deze uil is op slechts een paar plaatsen in de het montane bos van Itombwe, verder in de buurt van het Edwardmeer en het Nationaal park Nyungwe Forest in noordelijk Rwanda aangetroffen.

Status

Prigogines dwerguil heeft een beperkt verspreidingsgebied en daardoor is de kans op uitsterven aanwezig. Mogelijk is de vogel minder zeldzaam, maar wordt weinig opgemerkt door zijn nachtelijke leefwijze in (voor onderzoekers) lastig toegankelijk gebied. De grootte van de populatie werd in 2012 door BirdLife International ruw geschat op 3,5 tot 15 duizend individuen en de populatie-aantallen nemen af. Het leefgebied wordt aangetast door dramatisch snel verlopende ontbossing waarbij natuurlijk bos wordt omgezet in gebied voor beweiding, ongeorganiseerde mijnbouw, agrarisch gebruik en vestigingsgebied voor vluchtelingen. Om deze redenen staat deze soort als kwetsbaar op de Rode Lijst van de IUCN.^[1]
