This species is distinguished from all congeners except H. muzuspi by having a trunk pigmentation in the form of a lateral band that is progressively darker along medial, midventral, and ventral series of plates, and a caudal-fin pigmentation pattern formed by 6-8 narrow dark brown bars and a dark spot at the base of the lower lobe. It differs from H. muzuspi by having a reduced preopercle, not reaching hyomandibular-opercle condyle (vs. preopercle not reduced, reaching to hyomandibular-opercle condyle) and the absence of canal in preopercle (vs. presence of canal in the preopercle) (Ref. 84367).

Hypoptopoma baileyi is a species of catfish of the family Loricariidae.

This catfish reaches a maximum length of 4.4 centimetres (1.7 in) SL. It is demersal, being found in fresh water in the tropics.

Hypoptopoma baileyi is native to South America, Río Iténez, in the upper Rio Madeira basin, along the border between Bolivia and Brazil.

The fish is named in honor of ichthyologist Reeve M. Bailey (1911-2011) of the University of Michigan, who helped collect the type specimen in 1964.[1]

Interactions with humans

Hypoptopoma baileyi is harmless to humans.
