Distinguished from its very similar species, Triplophya leptosoma, by having the following characters: very wide trunk (the maximum thickness significantly exceeds the maximum depth); comparatively deeper body, caudal peduncle and dorsal fin; more posteriorposition of the beginning of the dorsal fin; larger ventroanal distance (16.4% SL); anus, settles out of the beginning of the anal fin to more than the orbit diameter (Ref. 57946).
