Ebmer et al. (1994) describe this species and five others from the genus Lasioglossum collected from the Southwest Archipelago, Japan. These are the islands between Taiwan and Kyushu, including Okinawa. In addition to the descriptions, the authors provide multiple photos of each species. Lasioglossum smilodon is a 5.3 - 6.0 mm long bee. Females were collected from plants such as Ampelopsis brevipedunclata, Sambucus racemosa, and Psychotria serpens in the northern islands of the Southwest Archipelago. No information on the nesting or social biology of the species was presented.
