Shrubs or small trees 1-14 m tall. Branchlets pubescent to glabrous. Petiole 0.3-2 cm; leaf blade elliptic or narrowly so, 3-25 X 1-10 cm, sometimes pubescent abaxially, apex acuminate, caudate, or obtuse; lateral veins 4-16 pairs. Cymes 3-16 cm. Flower buds with a broadly ovate head, apex rounded or obtuse. Corolla white, tube 0.8-2.2 cm; lobes obliquely oblong, falcate, 0.6-1.9 cm. Stamens inserted at or above middle of corolla tube. Ovary glabrous. Follicles obliquely ellipsoid, 1.2-7 X 0.5-3 cm, apex beaked or rounded. Fl. May-Jul, fr. Jul-Nov.

DESCRIPTION.—Shrub, glabrous. Leaves opposite. Petioles 1–2 cm long. Blades ovate to obovate, 10–15 × 5–6 cm, attenuate at base, acuminate, glaucous below. Cymes trichotomous, few-flowered. Peduncles 8–10 cm long, slender. Pedicels short. Flowers about 2 cm long. Calyx lobes acute, glandular at base. Corolla salverform, lobes ovate oblong. Follicles geminate, divaricate, obovate, falcate, keeled, to 4 cm long and 1.3 cm wide, beaked.

Rechinger has described a var. dilatata from Samoa, with wider elliptical-rotund leaves, having 9–10 secondary nerves.

RANGE.—Society Islands: Tahiti: Banks (BM, fide Seemann); Vesco in 1847 (P, fide Drake del Castillo); Ribourt ca. 1850 (P, fide Drake del Castillo); Nadeaud 370, Papara, Papaihonu, alt. 500 m, cliffs, in 1856–1859 (P, fide Drake del Castillo).

We have not seen this from the Society Islands. Wilder has reported it from Makatea (Wilder 1203, alt. 60 m (200 ft), 27 October 1932, fruit, (BISH). Ranges through Samoa (!), Tonga (!) and Fiji (!) west to Australia, Malaya, and Madagascar (Schumann).

LOCAL NAMES.—Tahitian: faiata (Nadeaud). Wilder records the same name in Makatea.

Tabernaemontana pandacaqui, known as windmill bush and banana bush,[5] is a species of plant in the dogbane family Apocynaceae.

Description

Tabernaemontana pandacaqui grows as a shrub or tree up to 14 m (50 ft) tall. Its flowers feature white or pale yellow corolla lobes. The fruit is orange, red or yellow with paired follicles, each up to 7 cm (3 in) in diameter.[6]

Distribution and habitat

Tabernaemontana pandacaqui is native to China, Taiwan, Thailand, Malesia, Papua New Guinea, Australia and many Pacific islands.[4] It is found in a wide variety of habitats, particularly in drier areas.[6] The species is also reportedly naturalized in the Windward Islands, Trinidad and Tobago and Panama.[4]
