Description of Protrichomonas
provided by BioPedia
Small flagellates (10-15 µm) which have three anterior flagella and no external recurrent flagellum. The capitulum of the axostyle is broad and the axostyle of the trunk slender and not protruding. The posterior part of the cell is enlarged and amoeboid. Electron microscopy of the species P. legeri living in the esophagus of the fish Box boops has shown the trichomonad features and also that the axoneme of the recurrent flagellum is intracytoplasmic. Another species has been reported in ducks. Light microscopy in Alexeieff (1910), diagnosis in Honigberg and Kuldova (1969), EM by Brugerolle (1980). Type species: Protrichomonas legeri (Alexeieff, 1910).
