Veronica serpyllifolia ssp. serpyllifolia L.Thyme-leaved Speedwell, DE: Gewhnlicher Quendel- Ehrenpreis, Thymianblttriger EhrenpreisSlo.: timijanov jetinikDat.: May 15. 2016Lat.: 46.36044 Long.: 13.70256Code: Bot_956/2016_DSC2130Habitat: Trodden grassland around a cottage; calcareous, skeletal, ground, under the canopy of large Tilia cordata, in half shade, partly protected from direct rain by tree canopy, elevation 600 m (1.970 feet); average precipitations ~ 3.000 mm/year, average temperature 7-9 deg C, alpine phytogeographical region. Place: Lower Trenta valley, between villages Soa and Trenta, next to the cottage Trenta 2b, East Julian Alps, Posoje, Slovenia EC. Comment: Genus Veronica is numerous. About 400 species grow worldwide and 36 in Slovenia. Most of them are low, inconspicuous plants with small, whitish, pink, pale violet or bluish flowers. Only a few of them have vividly blue, easy to spot flowers (for example, very common Veronica chamaedrys, which frequently forms large, dense, radiantly blue patches and much less frequent alpine Veronica fruticans). To recognize genus is not difficult. Most of them have typically shaped flowers and their fruits have a form of small hearts. Veronica serpyllifolia ssp. serpyllifolia is originally an Euro-Siberian, now Sub-cosmopolitan floral element. It is common and 'modest', not really showy and many times overlooked. However, its flowers are beautiful when looked with a hand lens. It keeps with road and path sides and other grassy, nitrogen rich places. One can find it from lowland to subalpine elevations. Paederota x churchillii Huter., syn.: Paederota-bonarota-x-Paederota-luteaDE: Hibrid Gelber Ehrenpreis und Buonarota-EhrenpreisSlo.: krianec med rumenim in modrim miljemDat.: July 28. 2005Lat.: 4621'46.69"S Long.: 1327'29.12"V46.36297 13.45809 Code: Bot_0067/2005_DSC0072Habitat: rocks and scree with scattered patches of grassland, almost vertical south oriented mountain slope; bare, calcareous ground; full sun; elevation 2.340 m (7.678 feet); average precipitations ~ 3.000 mm/year, average temperature ~ 0 deg C, alpine phytogeographical region. Substratum: soil in rock crevices.Place: Mt. Kanin mountain group, few meters below Forca Tedesca pass, below Mt. Hudi Vri, 2.478 m (8.130 feet), very close to Slovenia- Italy border line, Julian Alps, Posoje, Slovenia EC.Comment: There are only two species of genus Paederota: pale-yellow blooming Paederota lutea and intensive, dark blue blooming Paederota bonarota. Both are endemic to southeast Alps and both grow in Slovenia. Paederota lutea is a common plant of high mountains while Paederota bonarota is quite rare and in Slovenia limited to mountains of Upper Soa river region (west most Slovenian Alps). Where both species are coexisting they sometimes hybridize. The result is plants with intermediate traits of both parents. The most apparent is the color of flowers, which is somewhere in between pale yellow and deep blue. Such are also the leaves in respect to their shape, number of dents on their edge and color (yellow-green with many, sharp dents on each side with Paederota lutea and shiny, dark green, broadly egg shaped to almost round with only a few large dents with Paederota bonarota). The plants photographed seem closer to Paederota bonarota; however color of the flowers is evidently different. The hybrid has been found several times in Slovenia so far. Finds from Mangart's plateau and Upper Trenta valley have been described in literature (Ref.: 1, 2, 3). Only a few plants were found this time on Forca Tedesca with a single inflorescence. Most probably this was my first and the last encounter with this interesting mountain rarity. Ref.:(1) Personal communication. Yarrangobilly Caves, Kosciuszko National Park, New South Wales.Herbaceous perennial with radiating cane-like stems to about 1.5 m long, growing in sheltered hollow beside large limestone outcrop. Also occurs in moist forest off the limestone. This species and its close relatives in Australia have undergone changes in classification. Up until the mid 1960s all were included in Veronica. More intense study, including chromosome evidence, showed them to be allied to New Zealand species, justifying a reclassification into genus Parahebe in 1968. In 1992 the Australian Parahebes were (with 1 exception) segregated further into the genus Derwentia. However, all this was overturned a decade or so later, when major cladistic studies based largely on molecular evidence showed that these segregates (including Hebe!) all evolved from wihin Veronica as still recognised. In cladistic jargon, Veronica in the narrow sense was found to be paraphyletic. To maintain Veronica as a "natural" genus it was argued that the best solution was to sink all these segregate genera back into a "super-Veronica", and the nomenclatural formalities for this have all been published. The alternative would be to create many more segregate genera to accommodate all the basal branches of the Veronica Clade. Trouble is, many of these show no obvious morphological differences at generic level from each other or from Veronica in the narrowest sense (V. officinalis and allies). An extreme case of the latter kind of solution would be Dendrobium, split into over 30 genera by Clements & Jones -- still provoking much debate in orchid circles!Australian botanical institutions have rather reluctantly gone back to the all-inclusive Veronica. Not so sure about New Zealand, though, as Hebe is such a well known concept there.

Veronica fruticans Jacq.Rock Speedwell, DE: Felsen-EhrenpreisSlo.: skalni jetinikDat.: July 1. 2015Lat.: 46.44212 Long.: 13.64298Code: Bot_897/2015_IMG8804 Habitat: stony alpine grassland, road side, skeletal ground; southwest oriented mountain slope; open, sunny and dry place; calcareous ground, exposed to direct rain, elevation 2.000 m (6.500 feet), average precipitations ~ 3.000 mm/year, average temperature 0 - 2 deg C, alpine phytogeographical region. Substratum: soil among stones and rocks.Place: Mt. Mangart region, Mangart's flats, road side of Mt. Mangart Alpine tool road, at the beginning of the end road loop, East Julian Alps, Posoje, Slovenia EC.Comment: Veronica fruticans is one of the most beautiful species of very numerous genus Veronica. There are well above thirty species and subspecies known growing in Slovenia. They are not always easy to be determined correctly. Six of them climb up to alpine elevations. None of them has so intensive colored, deep blue flowers as Veronica fruticans. They are also quite large for the genus. Hence it is easy to spot it and to be properly recognized. Veronica fruticans grows exclusively in subalpine and alpine elevations. Individual flowers open for only a single day, but the flowers are clustered and they open one after another, therefore the plant can be spotted a considerably long time in July and August.Ref.:(1) A.Martini et all., Mala Flora Slovenije, Tehnina Zaloba Slovenije (2007) (in Slovene), p 478.
