Tetraprotodon (Tetraproctodon): gr. τετρα- tetra- – czworo-, od τεσσαρες tessares – cztery; πρωτο- prōto- – pierwszy; οδους odous, οδων odōn – ząb[9]. Gatunek typowy: Hippopotamus amphibius Linnaeus, 1758.
