They are native to China, Puerto Rico, The Contiguous United States, US Minor Outlying Islands, Pacific Basin excluding Hawaii, Hawaii, and U.S. Virgin Islands. They have loculicidal capsule fruit. Flowers are visited by Siphona, chalcidid wasps, (page not found), and Bigheaded ant. Individuals can grow to 4.4 m.
