Miconia calvescens (Velvet Tree) is a species of shrub in the family melastomes. It has a self-supporting growth form. It is native to Peru, Ecuador, Belize, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Brazil, Bolivia, Panama, Honduras, Argentina, Costa Rica, Colombia, Mexico, Paraguay, Bahia, Pará, Espirito Santo, Amazônia, Distrito Federal, Santa Catarina, Goiás, Mata Atlântica, Rondônia, Mato Grosso, Minas Gerais, Ceará, São Paulo, Sergipe, Pernambuco, Paraná, Amazônia, Acre (Brazil), Cerrado, Mato Grosso do Sul, Rio de Janeiro, and Alagoas. Velvet Tree has simple, broad leaves. It is a photoautotroph. Individuals can grow to 8 m.
