It is native to Costa Rica, Suriname, Belize, Guyana, Jamaica, Panama, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Mexico, Trinidad and Tobago, Colombia, Venezuela, Honduras, Amazônia, Pará, Amazônia, Roraima, and Acre (Brazil). It has simple, broad leaves. It is a photoautotroph. Individuals can grow to 8.9 m.
