Stems often bristly. Stipules usually 0. Inflorescences scapose or axillary, of 1-many-flowered racemes. Calyx tube cylindric. Petals pale yellow to scarlet or brick-red, rarely white, with a small ligule opposite the insertion. Stamens 5, 3 longer than the other 2. Capsule linear or narrowly ellipsoid, resembling a siliqua.
