They are native to Paraguay, Bolivia, Peru, Brazil, Ecuador, Uruguay, Argentina, and Chile. They have simple, broad leaves and fleshy fruit. Flowers are visited by Anna's Hummingbird, Horsefly-like Carpenter Bee, Berylline Hummingbird, and Black-chinned Hummingbird. Individuals can grow to 2.8 m.
