Banded Wolf Snake

Lycodon fasciatus, commonly known as the banded wolf snake, is a species of colubrid snake.

Distribution

It is found in India (Assam), Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Tibet, SW China (from Yunnan and Guangxi to Hubei, northward to Shaanxi and Gansu, Fujian, Sichuan).

Description

Adults may attain 53 cm (21 inches) in total length, with a tail 11 cm (4¼ inches) long.

Its color pattern consists of broad purplish-black rings which encircle its body and are separated by yellowish or reddish intervals. The first black ring does not encircle the neck.

The dorsal scales are in 17 rows, weakly keeled anteriorly, the keels becoming more pronounced posteriorly. The ventrals are 205–213; the anal is entire; and the divided subcaudals are 77–90.^[4]

Lycodon fasciatus, también conocida como serpiente lobo rayada, es una especie de serpiente del género Lycodon, de la familia de los colúbridos, que es originaria de Asia.^[3]​

Hallazgo y distribución

Fue descrita por primera vez por el naturalista británico, John Anderson en el año 1879; habita en la India (Assam), Birmania, Tailandia, Laos, Vietnam, Tíbet, suroeste de China (desde Yunnan y Guangxi hasta Hubei, y hacia el norte hasta Shaanxi, Gansu, Fujian y Sichuan).

Es de hábitos nocturnos.

Lycodon fasciatus est une espèce de serpent de la famille des Colubridae^[1].

Répartition

Cette espèce se rencontre^[1] :

• en Birmanie ;
• en Inde, dans l’État d'Assam ;
• au Laos ;
• dans le sud-ouest de la République populaire de Chine ;
• en Thaïlande ;
• au Viêt Nam.

Description

Dans sa description^[2] Anderson indique que le spécimen en sa possession, capturé par ses soins dans le xian de Yingjiang, mesure 53 cm dont 11 cm pour la queue. Son dos présente 55 rayures transversales noir violacé séparées par des intervalles rougeâtres^[3]. Le dessus de sa tête est brun foncé.

Il s'agit d'un serpent nocturne^[1].

Étymologie

Son nom d'espèce, du latin fasciata, « entouré de bandes », lui a été donné en référence à sa livrée.
