बाँझ नेपाल लगायत उत्तरी भारत, म्यानमार, पाकिस्तान तथा श्रीलङ्कामा पाइने गर्छ। यो वनस्पति नेपालमा समुन्द्र सतहबाट १५०० देखी २७०० मिटरको उचाईका जङ्गलहरूमा पाइने गर्छ।[३]

The leaves are thick and leathery, green on top but covered in thick wool on the underside.[4][5] It is classified in subgenus Cerris, section Ilex.[6]
This oak tree grows up to 20 m tall, and under the synonym Quercus oblongata has been recorded from Vietnam, where it may be called sồi bạc[7] or sồi bạch mao.[8]

Występuje na wysokości od 1200 do 2400 m n.p.m.[8] Kwitnie od kwietnia do maja[6]. Dobrze rośnie na glebach wapiennych. Występuje w 7. strefie mrozoodporności – toleruje spadki temperatur do -12°C[7].
Gatunek ten rośnie między innymi w Park Narodowy Wielkich Himalajów w północnych Indiach. Rośnie powszechnie w lasach w dolinie rzeki Tirthan[8].
