Free Tailed Reef Brotula

When alive, body coloration is brown with translucent orange fins and is covered in a thick granular mucus (Ref. 1602).Description: Characterized by caudal rays 10-12; without scales on head; cycloid and embedded body scales, about 100-106 in longitudinal series; greatest depth of body 19.7-20.7% SL; relatively large eye 5.3-5.7 % SL; maxillary extending beyond level of rear edge of eye (Ref. 90102).

Lives in the interstices of lagoon or seaward reefs (Ref. 1602). Benthic (Ref. 75154). Body covered with heavy coating of mucus (Ref. 1602).

分布於印度-太平洋區，西起紅海，東至薩摩亞，北至日本南部，南至澳洲皆有分布。臺灣分布於東北部海域。

成魚的體型很小，又非常罕見，除學術研究外，沒有任何利用價值。

體稍細長，側扁。前鼻孔和上唇距離非常接近。無鬚。眼大，吻長稍大於或等於眼徑。口大，上頜達眼後方；主上頜骨的末端不膨大。鰓蓋骨的後方有一尖棘，有時會被皮膚覆蓋。體被圓鱗；頭部完全無鱗，無側線。背、臀鰭很長，但不與尾鰭相連。背鰭鰭條數78-91；臀鰭鰭條數 58-69；尾鰭鰭條數 12。體褐色，鰭透明而具橘色光澤。

胎生魚種，雄魚具外生殖器。主要於棲息在潟湖及珊瑚礁區的淺水海域中，以礁區的小型浮游動物或是無脊椎動物為食。
