It can reach a maximum total length of 5 cm (2.0 in). This species feeds primarily on zooplankton.[2] The specific name honours the environmental biologist John S. Stephens Jr.[3]

Acanthemblemaria stephensi is een straalvinnige vissensoort uit de familie van snoekslijmvissen (Chaenopsidae).[2] De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort is voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 1988 door Rosenblatt & McCosker.
De soort staat op de Rode Lijst van de IUCN als Kwetsbaar, beoordelingsjaar 2007.[1]
