體延長而側扁。吻短。眼中大，眼眶後緣無乳突。口較大，稍傾斜。上下頜齒細小，前端具犬齒。下及間鰓蓋骨下緣具鋸齒。體被小櫛鱗；側線完全，側線鱗數40-46；上頜不具鱗；各鰭亦不具鱗。背鰭連續，具硬棘X，軟條15-16，第III背鰭棘最長；臀鰭硬棘III枚，軟條6-7；腹鰭腹位，延伸至臀鰭或不及；胸鰭軟條19-20；尾鰭彎月形，雄魚上下葉延長如絲。體紫紅色，具有許多波浪狀黃蠕紋，雄魚頭及體前半部具鮮紅色之大片區域，雌魚體偏黃；頭部由吻端至胸鰭基部具一條鑲淡藍紫色緣之黃色斜帶。雄魚尾鰭橘紅色，上下葉淡藍紫色，雌魚尾鰭橘黃色。
