體呈橢圓形而側扁,標準體長為體高之2.0-2.1倍。吻短而鈍圓。口中型;頜齒兩列,小而呈圓錐狀。眶下骨裸出,下緣具強鋸齒;前鰓蓋骨後緣具鋸齒。體被櫛鱗;鼻部具鱗;側線之有孔鱗片17-19個。背鰭單一,軟條部不延長而略呈角形,硬棘XIII,軟條15-16;臀鰭硬棘II,軟條15-16;胸鰭鰭條18;尾鰭叉形,上下葉末端呈圓狀。體呈黃褐色至褐色,胸、腹面有時偏黃;眶間骨與前額通常為橘紅至淡紅色,甚至延伸至背鰭;頭背頭另有一些藍紋,亦常延伸至背鰭。鰓蓋上緣有一小黑斑,胸鰭基部上方另具一小黑點。尾柄及尾鰭白色。無論任何時期,背鰭末端皆具眼狀斑。

棲地
