A densely crispate-woolly biennial or short-lived perennial with ascending stems branched from woody base. Leaves are oblong; the cauline leaves are pinnatilobed; the upper leaves are sessile and auriculate. Capitula are subtended by 2–3 small leaves at the tips of the branchlets. Corollas are purplish. Fruit is a sparsely pubescent achene with a pappus of barbellate bristles.
