This is a section of the rhizome of a fern, Pleopeltis percussa. To counter the fungal infection the cells produce lignin. Lignin makes the cell walls woody. With this strategy the plant tries to prevent the fungal infection to spread further.
-
Here, Acridin Red, a fluorescent stain, has been used to color the lignified cellwalls. You can see that the infected cells have an anomalous shape.

This is a cut of a fern frond. On the outside are lignified cells (red) to give the fern frond stability. Inside (green, white) is the pulp. There are two vascular bundles. Each vascular bundle is surrounded by a bundle sheath (brown).

Acer pseudoplatanus in the foreground, a typical ravine forest tree - here in Ysper gorge however not as dominant as
Acer platanoides (of which there also are plenty of leaves - in the background, in bokeh).
