Gewöhnlicher Grannenreis (Piptatherum miliaceum (L.) Coss., Syn.: Oloptum miliaceum (L.) Röser & Hamasha) ist eine Art der Gattung Piptatherum und damit der Familie der Süßgräser (Poaceae).
Der Gewöhnliche Grannenreis ist eine ausdauernde Grasart, die 60 bis 150 Zentimeter hoch wird. Er ist überwiegend kahl. Die 5–8 Knoten der Halme sind oft dunkelviolett gefärbt. Die Laubblätter sind flach und meist 3–8 Millimeter breit, sie sind oberseits und an den Rändern rau. Die Art hat anstelle des Blatthäutchens nur einen kurz behaarten, häutigen, 0,5–1,5(–3) Millimeter langen Saum. Die Blütenrispe ist 10–35 Zentimeter lang und 6–15 Zentimeter breit sie ist locker ausgebreitet und die Seitenäste gehen zu 3–6 oder 20–30 von der Hauptachse ab. 3–8–(50) dünne Seitenäste, wobei die unteren manchmal keine Ährchen tragen. Die Ährchen sind einblütig und 3–4 Millimeter lang. Die Deckspelze ist kahl, dreinervig, 1,5–2 Millimeter lang und trägt eine 3–5 Millimeter lange, leicht abfallende, endständige Granne.
Die Blütezeit ist April bis Oktober.
Die Chromosomenzahl ist 2n = 24.[1]
Der Gewöhnliche Grannenreis kommt vom Mittelmeergebiet bis zum Iran und in Makaronesien vor.[2] Die Art fehlt in Deutschland und in der Schweiz. Sie wächst in Felsfluren, auf Weideland, auf warmen steinigen Abhängen, unter überhängenden Felsen, an Wegrändern und an Mauern, auch auf Kulturland und an feuchten Standorten.[3]
Der Gewöhnliche Grannenreis wurde von Carl von Linné als Agrostis miliacea in Sp. Pl.: 61 (1753) erstbeschrieben. Die Art wurde dann von Ernest Saint-Charles Cosson als Piptatherum miliaceum (L.) Coss. in Notes Pl. Crit.: 129 (1812) in die Gattung Piptatherum gestellt. In jüngster Zeit wurde sie von Röser & Hamasha in Pl. Syst. Evol. 298: 365 (2012) als Oloptum miliaceum (L.) Röser & Hamasha in die von ihnen selbst neu aufgestellte Gattung Oloptum gestellt. Synonyme der Art sind beispielsweise: Oryzopsis miliacea (L.) Asch. & Schweinf., Agrostis sepium L., Milium arundinaceum Sm. und Urachne frutescens Link.[2]

Es un agrupamiento perenne que produce robustos y erguidos tallos de hierba que puede alcanzar 1,5 metros de altura. Hojas con vaina glabra; lígula de 1-3 mm, pubescente; limbo de hasta 50 x 0,2-1,2 cm, plano o convoluto con la desecación, con haz marcadamente estriado y escábrido y envés liso. La inflorescencia en forma de panícula de 20-50 cm, piramidal, con parte superior péndula, muy laxa; eje generalmente liso; ramas verticiladas, erecto-patentes o patentes, flexuosas, capilares, escábridas; Espiguillas de 2,5-3,6 mm, frecuentemente violáceas. Glumas más largas que la flor, lanceoladas u ovado-lanceoladas, trinervadas, acuminadas, glabras; la inferior de 2,5-3,6 mm; la superior de 2,3-3,4 mm. Lema de 1,7-2,5 mm, trinervada, obtusa, glabra, con 1 arista terminal de 2-5 mm. Pálea tan larga como la lema. Anteras de 1-1,5 mm. Florece de abril a noviembre.[4]
Piptatherum miliaceum fue descrita por (L.) Coss. y publicado en Notes sur Quelques Plantes Critiques, Rares, ou Nouvelles, ... 129. 1851.[5]
Piptatherum: nombre genérico derivado del griego pipto = "caer", y la palabra therum para "gluma", lo que significa "glumas caídas".[6]
