El gàlag de Matschie (Galago matschiei) és una espècie de primat de la família dels galàgids. Rep el seu nom en honor a Paul Matschie.

Merkmale

Brillengalagos erreichen eine Kopfrumpflänge von 15 bis 20 Zentimetern, wozu noch ein 20 bis 28 Zentimeter langer Schwanz kommt. Das Gewicht beträgt 170 bis 250 Gramm. Ihr Fell ist am Rücken in einem dunklen Rotgrau gefärbt, der Bauch ist heller. Die Augen, die als Anpassung an die nachtaktive Lebensweise vergrößert sind, sind von auffälligen Augenringen umgeben. Die Ohren sind ebenfalls vergrößert, sie sind unbehaart und sehr beweglich.

Verbreitung und Lebensraum

Brillengalagos leben im Nordosten der Demokratischen Republik Kongo sowie in den angrenzenden Regionen Ugandas, Ruandas und Burundis. Ihr Lebensraum sind tropische Primär- und Sekundärwälder.

Lebensweise

Diese Primaten sind wie alle Galagos nachtaktiv, tagsüber schlafen sie in Blätternestern oder Baumhöhlen. In der Nacht gehen sie auf Nahrungssuche, dabei bewegen sie sich senkrecht kletternd und springend fort und halten sich eher in den unteren Schichten der Bäume auf. Ihre Nahrung besteht vorwiegend aus Insekten und Baumsäften.

Gefährdung

In Teilen ihres Verbreitungsgebietes sind Brillengalagos von Waldrodungen betroffen, insgesamt ist die Art aber häufig und laut IUCN „nicht gefährdet“ (least concern).

The dusky bushbaby (Galago matschiei) is a species of primate in the family Galagidae. It is also known as Matschie's galago, in honour of the German zoologist Paul Matschie, curator of mammals at the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin.^[3] Native to tropical Central Africa, it is found in forests in Burundi, Rwanda, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda. The species is small with a long tail, and has an arboreal, nocturnal and omnivorous lifestyle.

Description

The dusky bushbaby is a medium-sized galago with a head-and-body length of approximately 166 mm (7 in) and a tail of 255 mm (10 in). It weighs around 210 g (7 oz). The face is distinctively marked with a broad pale streak extending from the snout to the fore-head. The large eyes have amber-coloured irises and are surrounded by brownish-black eye rings, outside which is a ridge, particularly obvious on the fore-head. The cheeks are pale grey and the long ears are either black or tipped with black. The upper parts of the body and limbs are dark brown, with a yellowish tinge on the shoulder. The sides of the neck, throat, underparts and underside of the limbs are pale grey. The tail is evenly furred throughout its length and not, or only slightly, bushy, dark grey or greyish-brown, darker towards the tip. The tail is often kept loosely coiled when the animal is at rest, and sometimes when it is in motion. The nails have slightly raised ridges on the upper surfaces and sharp, projecting points. The eye shine of this bushbaby is orange.^[4]

Distribution and habitat

The range is restricted to the Albertine Rift region of Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, with some sightings further east in Uganda, though some of these may have been of Thomas's bushbaby (Galagoides thomasi). It occurs in both primary and secondary forest in both lowland and lower montane habitats, especially in forests dominated by the Guinea plum (Parinari excelsa).^[2]

Ecology

Similar to other galagos, the dusky bushbaby is nocturnal and usually solitary, and hides in a hole by day. It forages mostly in the mid and lower parts of the canopy. The diet includes beetles, moths and caterpillars as well as fruits, flowers and gums. The breeding habits of this species are poorly known, but reproduction may peak in November and December,^[4] with one to four young being raised annually.^[2] Mothers carry their infants in their mouths, and sometimes "park" them on branches near the nest hole.^[4]

Status

G. matschiei is relatively common in parts of its range and is present in a number of well-protected areas. The main threat is deforestation and the population is probably declining, but probably not at a sufficiently fast rate to threaten the species, and the International Union for Conservation of Nature has assessed its conservation status as being of "least concern".^[2]

De oostelijke kielnagelgalago of Matschies galago (Galago matschiei) is een soort van het geslacht kleine galago's (Galago). De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort werd voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd door Lorenz in 1917.

Galago matschiei^[2][3][4] är en primat som beskrevs av Lorenz 1917. Galago matschiei ingår i släktet Galago och familjen galagoer.^[5][6] IUCN kategoriserar arten globalt som livskraftig.^[1] Inga underarter finns listade i Catalogue of Life.^[5]

Denna galago förekommer i östra Kongo-Kinshasa, Uganda, Rwanda och Burundi. Habitatet utgörs av tropiska skogar i låglandet och i bergstrakter. Individerna klättrar sällan till trädens topp. Honan föder upp till fyra ungar per kull.^[1]

Arten blir 14,7 till 18,4 cm lång (huvud och bål), har en 24 till 28 cm lång svans och väger 196 till 225 g. Den har brunaktig päls på ryggen och en vitaktig undersida. Svansen är täckt av brun päls liksom bålens ovansida. Djuret har ett ljust ansikte och kring ögonen förekommer breda svartaktiga ringar.^[7]

Galago matschiei äter naturgummi, ryggradslösa djur och frukter beroende på utbudet. Annars är levnadssättet antagligen lika som hos andra arter av samma släkte.^[7]
