Es troba a la mar Adriàtica i els seus afluents entre els rius Po (Itàlia) i Bojana (Albània), incloent-hi Bòsnia i Hercegovina, Croàcia, Sèrbia i Eslovènia. També és present a l'illa grega de Corfú.[11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21][7][22]
La seua carn és emprada com a aliment, però els ous no es consumeixen com a caviar.[23]
Es troba amenaçat d'extinció per la destrucció del seu hàbitat, la fragmentació de les seues poblacions (sobretot, per la construcció de preses per generar energia hidroelèctrica al riu Po),[24] la competència amb espècies introduïdes (com ara, el silur -Silurus glanis-), la contaminació de l'aigua i la pesca excessiva (tant legal com il·legal).[25][26]

Die Art besitzt 11–14 Rückenschilde, 32–42 Seitenschilde, die eng aneinander liegen und mehr als doppelt so hoch wie breit sind, sowie 8–11 Bauchschilde. Die Schnauze ist oberseits verknöchert und vorn rundlich oder kegelförmig abgestumpft. Die runden, ziemlich langen Bartfäden sind fransenlos und stehen näher an der Schnauzenspitze als am Mund, zurückgelegt erreichen sie den Rand des Mundes nicht. Die Färbung der Rückenseite variiert bei dieser Störart je nach Aufenthaltsort von gelblich über ockerfarben und bräunlich bis schwärzlich. Die Bauchseite ist ebenso wie die großen Knochenschilde gelblich bis schmutzigweiß. Die maximale Länge dieses Störes liegt bei 200 cm, meist werden aber nur 100 bis 150 cm erreicht.
Der Adriatische Stör ist in der Küstenregion der Adria von Albanien, Kroatien, Bosnien und Herzegowina, Griechenland, Italien, Montenegro und Slowenien zu finden. Von dort steigt er zur Laichzeit in die großen Flüsse der norditalienischen Tiefebene (Po, Etsch und Tagliamento) auf.
Über die Biologie dieses anadromen Wanderfisches ist kaum etwas bekannt. Früher stieg er bis in die Oberläufe der großen Adriazuflüsse auf, um dort zur Laichzeit von April bis Mai an tiefen, stark überströmten Sand- und Kiesstellen abzulaichen. Aufgrund der Verschmutzung und des Verbaus der Laichgewässer ist die Art heute selten geworden, Laichaufstiege finden kaum noch statt.
Laut der Roten Liste gefährdeter Arten (IUCN Red List) ist Acipenser naccarii in Italien vom Aussterben bedroht und auf dem Balkan ausgestorben (Stand Oktober 2009).[3]
Der Adriatische Stör wird von der Europäischen Union in den Anhängen II und IV der FFH-Richtlinie als prioritäre Art geführt und gilt damit als streng zu schützende Art von gemeinschaftlichem Interesse, für deren Erhaltung von den Mitgliedsstaaten besondere Schutzgebiete ausgewiesen werden müssen.

The Adriatic sturgeon reaches a maximum length exceeding 2 m (6.6 ft); the published maximum weight was 25 kg (55 lb), but large wild fish recently caught were evidently exceeding 40 kg (88 lb).
Like other sturgeons it has an elongated body, heterocercal tail, partially cartilaginous skeleton, naked skin and longitudinal series of bony scutes on the body. The rostrum is tendentially conical and rather short (1/3 of the head), the head is broad and rounded at the apex, with a protractile mouth which lower lip is thin with a central cleft, and four barbels (circular section) which are closer to the tip of the snout than they are to the mouth. The series of longitudinal scutes are five: dorsal (1 series, 10–14 scutes), lateral (2 series, one per side, 30–42 scutes each) and ventral series (2 series, one per side, 8–11 scutes each).[5] The dorsal fin has no spines and 36 to 48 soft rays, and the anal fin has 24 to 31 soft rays. The dorsal colouring is olive-brown, the flanks are paler and the underside white.[6][7] Juveniles have a flattened and triangular rostrum, with a distinctive colouring on the back, dark brown with wide paler areas casually distributed .
Adriatic sturgeon was reported as very similar to the critically endangered European sea sturgeon (Acipenser sturio), once sympatric in the Adriatic sea, but distinctive characters for A. naccarii are:[8]
The Adriatic sturgeon can be found in freshwater and marine environments, including estuaries and brackish water. Historically it was to be found in the Adriatic Sea and the rivers flowing into it on either side. In 1932 its range in the sea was reported to be from Venice and Trieste to Greece and Corfu. It used to be present in the rivers Adige, Brenta, Bacchiglione, Piave, Livenza and Tagliamento. In the Po and its tributaries, it used to be present as far upstream as Turin, and it was reported numerous in the Ticino and Adda rivers. It traditionally occurred along the Albanian coasts, and in the rivers of Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Montenegro, including Lake Skadar.
Once considered an anadromous species, a recent study affirms that A. naccarii is an euryhaline species facultatively migratory, which lives also into the sea but spends most of its life in the lower part of the rivers.[9] In the same study it has been reported that, unlike most of the species of sturgeons, A. naccarii is a facultative anadromous, since a small, isolated and structured population was spawning and maintaining above Isola Serafini Dam before the building of a fish ladder (on 2017, EU project Life11nat/IT/000188), at the mouth of Ticino river in the Po, without any migration to the sea;[10][11] the distribution of the catches of this sturgeon throughout the year confirm this hypothesis.[12] This was never confirmed for the obliged anadromous A. sturio and Huso huso, other two species of sturgeon which once lived simpatrically with A. naccarii.
Adriatic sturgeons are slow-growing, long-lived fish; wild males are sexually mature at 7–11 years old (about 80 cm, or 2.6 ft, long), and females at 12–14 years old (at least 1 m, or 3.3 ft, long). Females ovulate every 2–4 years.[13]
During spring months mature fish migrate to the upper part of the rivers, then they lay eggs from April to June[14] in deep and oxygenated waters, on gravelly substrates at a depth of 2–10 m (6.6–32.8 ft),[15] with a current velocity of 0.8 m/s at least.[16] Water turbulence is very important for the reproductive success of sturgeons, since it avoids egg stress, aggregation of the eggs, anoxia, parasites, and predators.[17]
The eggs adhere at the substrate and hatch after about a week, fry are about 8–10 mm (0.31–0.39 in) long with pelagic attitude like other sturgeons, then after ten days they begin to be demersal.[8]
Adriatic sturgeons tend toward an opportunistic feeding, swallowing substrate together with prey and organic matter, including small decaying carrions. In the rivers they mainly eat gammarids, diptera larvae and oligochaetes, sometimes small fish,[18] which they suck up with their toothless, funnel-like mouths; considering the present invasion in the Po and other rivers of the allochtonous Corbicula sp., probably these freshwater clams are now an important prey. In the sea they eat gammarids, shrimps, crabs, demersal fish, molluscs (cephalopods, gastropods, bivalves) and vegetal matter.[19] In both cases, the analysis of the digestive tract revealed a high presence of inorganic matter (sand, silt, mud, etc., even plastic) mixed with food.
The typical habitat of A. naccarii are large, deep rivers with strong current, which flows in the Adriatic sea, mainly in its north-western portion. In the sea it lives in lagoons and close to the estuaries, mainly on muddy and sandy substrates, at a depth of 10–40 m (33–131 ft).
Juveniles of Adriatic sturgeon can adapt at a salinity of 20–30‰,[20] as opposed to other species of sturgeons.[21] However, despite some A. naccarii have been captured in the Adriatic Sea, it has been shown that this sturgeon tolerates with difficulty high salinity for extended periods, spending in marine environments short periods for foraging activities.[22] The low tolerance to full-strength salt water constitutes a strong constraint to migration across Adriatic Sea where the salt contents can reach up to 37‰.[23] Furthermore, it has been shown, tracking the movements of tagged fish in some cold and oxygenated rivers of northern Italy (Piave, Sile, Livenza), that A. naccarii regularly moves to areas where the salt intrusion from the sea involves an electrical conductivity of 1000–4000 μS in the water (about 0.6–2.5‰ salinity at 18 °C), on equal terms of other environmental variables.[24]
A study on genetic variability of Acipenser naccarii, based on mitochondrial and nuclear DNA, showed that sturgeons of the Po Basin are genetically distinguished from those of the Buna (Bojana) Basin. So, the introduction of sturgeons of the Po in the Buna river would jeopardize the genetic differences between both populations and should thus be avoided[23] (if the Buna population is still existing).
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) rates the conservation status of this fish as "critically endangered" and "possibly extinct in the wild." For a long time, scientists reported that no spawning was observed in the wild.[1] However, a number of organisations are concerned in attempts to preserve this species and a captive breeding scheme has been established, with young microchipped fish released into the wild[1] officially since 2004, following EU projects (Life03nat/IT/000113 and subsequents); before 2004, almost only post-larvae and very small sturgeons were released (since 1988), at a time when fishing of sturgeons was still allowed in Italy (until 1997) and the allochtonous wels catfish (Silurus glanis) was at the apex of its numerical expansion in Italian rivers, so the survival rate was extremely low.[24] The captive broodstock for the programme of reintroduction comprised initially about 50[8] individual fish. The Adriatic sturgeon is a tetraploid fish (has four sets of chromosomes) and research based on mitochondrial and microsatellite information is applied on the breeding stock to establish how best to increase the genetic diversity of the fish used in the breeding programme.[25][26]
It has been reported by researchers that, despite the release of captive-bred fish, no signs of spawning have been observed in the wild;[1] however, considering that Adriatic sturgeon needs at least twelve years to attain sexual maturity and matures gonads in alternate years, and considering the release of captive small fish started in 2004, it was probably premature to look for wild fingerlings at the time of the publication of the report (2011).
About the southwestern population, it was reported that Adriatic sturgeon was seen for the last time in Greece in 1977, and in Albania in 1997 in the Buna River, but has not been seen there since;[1] however, in 2003 a study published genetic data of several specimens especially caught in Buna river, below the confluence with Lake Skadar.[23]
In the recent past catfish anglers caught, filmed and released mature specimens of Adriatic sturgeon in the Po and other rivers, also very large, old fish (for example, [1], [2],[3]).[27] After the building of a fish ladder on Isola Serafini dam, on 2018 a project GRAIA (Gestione Ricerca Ambientale Ittica Acque) started and a cam is now monitoring continuously the passage of fish through the mentioned ladder. Among millions of fish, mature specimens of Adriatic sturgeon were filmed.
The capture of juveniles without microchips, smaller than those released into the wild by researchers and authorities, is an indication that Adriatic sturgeon naturally spawned in Italian rivers.[28] Molecular analyses showed that, among those fish, some were not related with the captive broodstock,[8] so it seems that a wild broodstock still exists.
The main threat that Adriatic sturgeons face is damming, which involves the fragmentation of the habitat and prevents trophic and spawning migrations. The building of a dam severely modifies the river habitat upstream and downstream for many kilometers: upstream the current can be very slow, with water turbidity, water stratification and hypoxia or even anoxia on the bottom; downstream the nature of the substrate can change and water can be warmer and hypoxic, so the reproductive success of sturgeons can be very low or null and the metabolism of juveniles can be very stressed (above 23–25 °C for A. naccarii).[29] Before the building of some fish ladders on the main watercourses, most (if any) of the traditional spawning areas of the Po basin were not available to Adriatic sturgeons for decades, and this involved the collapse of wild populations of A. naccarii, as well as of other species of sturgeon (A. sturio, Huso huso) in the Adriatic sea. The only suitable remaining habitat for spawning were in the vicinity of the confluence of the River Po with some of its tributaries.[1]
Another important problem is pollution of rivers by industrial effluent, agricultural runoff and civil wastewaters.
During the XX century, overfishing on adults and above all immature sturgeons was another important cause of the decline of the wild stock of A. naccarii. Despite it is now a protected species, illegal fishing by poachers is presently one of the main threat in the Po basin (for example, [4],[5]), particularly harmful when smaller fish are taken before they have reached maturity and reproduced at least once. Illegal capture with giant lift nets placed close to the estuaries can be a big threat, as well as commercial fishing in the sea and lagoons.
Predation by cormorant on juveniles is another important problem: Italian wintering populations of these birds are extremely numerous and increasing every year,[30] so many of them are moving to rivers and lakes, due to numerical saturation of the coastal areas.[31]
Adriatic sturgeons also face competition from the wels catfish, which has expanded its range into Western Europe; however, wels catfish cohabits with many species of sturgeon in its native range. It has been supposed that, as they have become fewer in number, they could be affected by the Allee effect,[1] which postulates that a fish's growth rate is reduced at low population densities; however, any study was published about Allee effect on A. naccarii.

En noviembre de 2015, un espécimen grande, estimado en aproximadamente 2 metros de largo, fue capturado en el río Po cerca de Ostiglia (Mantova) y luego fue liberado; se pensó que era una señal alentadora de que la calidad del agua del río era lo suficientemente alta como para que un pez tan grande viviera allí.

Acipenser naccarii, communément appelé l'Esturgeon de l'Adriatique est une espèce de poissons de la famille des Acipenseridae, endémique de la mer Adriatique et en particulier dans les eaux douces du nord de l'Italie et le long des côtes adriatiques de l'Albanie, de la Croatie, de la Grèce, du Monténégro et de la Slovénie[2]. Des spécimens peuvent être observés dans plusieurs aquariums publics italiens, tels que l'Aquarium de Milan[3] et l'Aquarium de Gênes, ainsi qu'en Espagne à l'Aquarium Finisterrae[4]. C'est un poisson allongé qui peut atteindre une longueur maximale d'environ 2 m et une masse maximal de 25 kg avec un dos brun olive, des flancs plus pâles et un ventre blanchâtre[5].
L'Esturgeon de l'Adriatique est menacé par la perte de son habitat et la surpêche, en particulier la capture de poissons immatures qui ne se sont pas reproduits. Les populations de poissons ont fortement diminué de plus de 80% depuis les 60 dernières années[2]. En 2010, l'Union internationale pour la conservation de la nature a changé son statut de conservation d'espèce vulnérable (VU) à espèce en danger critique d'extinction (CR), et il est probable qu'il soit fonctionnellement éteint à l'état sauvage, comme aucune reproduction n'a été confirmée depuis les années 80. Son aire de répartition actuelle est réduite au cours moyen et inférieur du Pô. Cependant, il se reproduit avec succès en captivité et survit dans les piscicultures commerciales et les programmes d'élevage en captivité[2].
Tout comme les autres esturgeons, l'Esturgeon de l'Adriatique possède un squelette cartilagineux, caractéristique de la sous-classe des chondrostéens. Il n'a également pas d'écaille mais son corps est partiellement recouvert de plaques osseuses, appelées les scutelles et quatre barbillons tactiles qui précèdent leur bouche édentée. Il possède un corps allongé, un rostre plat, des scutelles osseuses distinctives et un lobe supérieur allongé de sa nageoire caudale. Il s'agit d'un prédateur benthiques. Avec son rostre il remue la vase, et utilise ses barbillons pour détecter des mollusques, des crustacés et de petits poissons dont il se nourrit.
L'Esturgeon de l'Adriatique peut atteindre une longueur maximale d'environ 2 m et une masse maximal de 25 kg. Son museau est large et arrondi, la lèvre inférieure a une fente centrale et les quatre barbillons sont plus près de l'extrémité du museau que de la bouche. La nageoire dorsale qui ne présente aucune épine, a entre 36 et 48 rayures estompées, et la nageoire anale a entre 24 et 31 rayures estompées. La coloration dorsale est brun olive, les flancs sont plus pâles et la face inférieure est blanche[5].
L'Esturgeon de l'Adriatique est une espèce anadrome à longue durée de vie, environ 20 ans[2], que l'on trouve à différentes périodes de sa vie en eau douce et en milieu marin, notamment dans les estuaires et les eaux saumâtres. On le trouve à des profondeurs de 10 à 40 m. Après avoir passé une période de croissance dans les estuaires et les eaux côtières, les jeunes poissons passent la majeure partie de leur vie dans les grandes rivières, à la recherche de crustacés et de petits poissons qu'ils aspirent avec leur bouche édentée. Les poissons adultes remontent le cours d'eau au printemps pour frayer dans les eaux peu profondes claires et graveleuses. De nos jours, les seules frayères appropriées pour cette espèce se trouvent au confluent du Pô et de ses affluents[2].
Historiquement, il se trouvait dans la mer Adriatique et dans les rivières qui s'y jettent de part et d'autre. En 1932, son aire de répartition en mer s'étendait de Venise et Trieste à la Grèce et à Corfou. En 1892, il était présent dans les rivières Adige, Brenta, Bacchiglione, Piave, Livenza, Tagliamento et dans le Pô et ses affluents, où il a été signalé jusqu'à Turin. Il était aussi traditionnellement présent dans les rivières Ticino et Adda, le long des côtes albanaises, et dans les rivières de Croatie, de Bosnie-Herzégovine et du Monténégro, y compris le lac de Skadar. Il a été signalé une dernière fois en 1973 en Grèce et en 1997 en Albanie dans le fleuve Buna[2].
De nos jours, à la suite d'un plan de reconstitution mené par plusieurs institutions publiques de 1990 à 2007, des spécimens ont été recensés dans le Pô et ses affluents Tessin, Adda, Oglio et Mincio, et dans les rivières Adige, Livenza, Piave, Tagliamento. Le barrage de l'Île Serafini, situé au milieu du fleuve Pô, empêche les mouvements migratoires des populations en aval vers la partie amont du fleuve. Il n'existe aucune preuve de frai naturel d'individus sauvages ou relâchés[2].

L'Esturgeon de l'Adriatique est confronté à un certain nombre de menaces telles que la pollution des cours d'eau par les effluents industriels et le ruissellement agricole et la fragmentation de son habitat par la construction de barrages, qui l'empêche de se déplacer en amont vers des frayères appropriées. La surpêche illégale ou légale est particulièrement néfaste puisqu'elle capture également des jeunes poissons n'ayant pas atteint leur maturité sexuelle. Il est également confronté à la concurrence du Silure glane (Silurus glanis) qui a étendu son aire de répartition en Europe occidentale. Comme sa population est moins nombreuse, il est affecté par l'effet Allee qui soutient que le taux de croissance d'un poisson est réduit si la densité de population est plus faible[2].
En 2010, n'ayant observée aucune fraie dans la nature depuis la fin des années 80, l'Union internationale pour la conservation de la nature décide de classer ce poisson dans la catégorie espèce en danger critique d'extinction. L'espèce était listée dans la catégorie Vulnérable depuis 1996[2]. Un plan de reconstitution de cette espèce a été mis en œuvre par plusieurs administrations publiques depuis le début des années 1990, avec des recherches scientifiques et des actions de repeuplement d'environ un demi-million de spécimens de différentes tailles réintroduits dans les eaux publiques (rivières Adda, Oglio, Piave, Po). La reproduction artificielle en pisciculture (ex-situ) est efficace et réussie depuis 1988, à partir d'une population originale capturée dans la nature dans les années 1970. Cependant, il n'existe aucune preuve confirmant la poursuite de la reproduction à l'état sauvage[2].
Acipenser naccarii, communément appelé l'Esturgeon de l'Adriatique est une espèce de poissons de la famille des Acipenseridae, endémique de la mer Adriatique et en particulier dans les eaux douces du nord de l'Italie et le long des côtes adriatiques de l'Albanie, de la Croatie, de la Grèce, du Monténégro et de la Slovénie. Des spécimens peuvent être observés dans plusieurs aquariums publics italiens, tels que l'Aquarium de Milan et l'Aquarium de Gênes, ainsi qu'en Espagne à l'Aquarium Finisterrae. C'est un poisson allongé qui peut atteindre une longueur maximale d'environ 2 m et une masse maximal de 25 kg avec un dos brun olive, des flancs plus pâles et un ventre blanchâtre.
L'Esturgeon de l'Adriatique est menacé par la perte de son habitat et la surpêche, en particulier la capture de poissons immatures qui ne se sont pas reproduits. Les populations de poissons ont fortement diminué de plus de 80% depuis les 60 dernières années. En 2010, l'Union internationale pour la conservation de la nature a changé son statut de conservation d'espèce vulnérable (VU) à espèce en danger critique d'extinction (CR), et il est probable qu'il soit fonctionnellement éteint à l'état sauvage, comme aucune reproduction n'a été confirmée depuis les années 80. Son aire de répartition actuelle est réduite au cours moyen et inférieur du Pô. Cependant, il se reproduit avec succès en captivité et survit dans les piscicultures commerciales et les programmes d'élevage en captivité.

Spolnu zrelost mužjaci dostižu nakon 6 do 8 godina, a ženke nakon 8 do 12 godina. Ženke se razmnožavaju svake druge godine od ožujka do svibnja (po drugim izvorima od svibnja do srpnja). Mladi na početku jako brzo rastu, do svoje druge godine. Mladima treba oko 10 godina da bi dostigli duljinu od 100 cm. Odrasli primjerci mogu narasti do 200 cm duljine i do 25 kg težine. Upotrebljava se za jelo, vrlo je ukusna, ali, za razliku od svoje rođakinje štrljuna ili atlantske jesetre (lat. Acipenser sturio), ne služi za dobivanje kavijara.
Jadranska jesetra spada u kritično ugrožene vrste, te je ušla na popis vrsta pred istrebljenjem i ugroženih vrsta u Zakon o potvrđivanju protokola o posebno zaštićenim područjima i biološkoj raznolikosti u Sredozemlju[2]. Zakon o zaštiti prirode (NN 70/05) strogo zabranjuje svaki ribolov na jadransku jesetru[3].
Jadranska jesetra živi u Jadranskom moru na obalama Italije, Hrvatske, BiH, i Crne Gore. Njena prisutnost na obalama Iberijskog poluotoka, kao i sjeverozapadne Grčke je nepotvrđena, a najnovija istraživanja vrsta iz Jadrana i onih kod Iberijskog poluotoka upućuju na dvije podvrste iste ribe[4].

Lo storione cobice[2] (Acipenser naccarii Bonaparte, 1836) è un pesce eurialino semi-anadromo endemico del Mar Adriatico.
Il nome scientifico fu assegnato in onore di Fortunato Luigi Naccari, naturalista veneto autore di Ittiologia Adriatica e primo a intuire l'esistenza della specie.[3]
La specie si ritrova soltanto nel Mar Adriatico e non esistono segnalazioni autorevoli da altri mari. Per la riproduzione risale soprattutto il fiume Po ed alcuni suoi affluenti (tra cui Ticino e Adda) ma anche Adige, Brenta, Piave, Tagliamento, Livenza ed altri tributari dell'Adriatico, anche appenninici. Sul lato orientale del Mar Adriatico risale sicuramente i fiumi Cetina e Narenta ma la sua distribuzione non è nota con certezza. Pare accertata la sua presenza nel Lago di Scutari tra Albania e Montenegro.[1] Durante la sua vita marina frequenta prevalentemente gli estuari dei fiumi in fondali sabbiosi e fangosi profondi, talvolta spingendosi fino agli scogli. Durante la sua vita fluviale predilige i fiumi a portata maggiore, con acque lente e fondali sabbiosi.[4]
Il muso è conico e corto, con capo largo e arrotondato. I 4 barbigli a funzione sensoriale sono distanziati dalla bocca protrattile, che presenta un labbro inferiore continuo, interrotto solo nel centro. La pinna caudale è eterocerca (asimmetrica) Le placche ossee sono organizzate in 5 file: le dorsali sono 5-14, le laterali 32-42 per lato, le ventrali 8-11 per lato. Colore verde olivaceo-marrone sul dorso, più chiaro sui fianchi,con ventre biancastro.[5]
Assai simile allo storione comune (Acipenser sturio), se ne differenzia principalmente per alcuni particolari:
Essendo una specie semi-anadroma risale i fiumi per la riproduzione ma pare esistano popolazioni residenti in acqua dolce, ad esempio quelle del Po a monte della diga di Isola Serafini che possano riprodursi con successo nonostante sia loro precluso l'accesso al e dal mare. Tale evidenza fa ritenere[7] che la specie possa essere migratoria facoltativa, al contrario di quanto avviene per le altre due della famiglia delle Acipenseridae un tempo presenti in Italia: Acipenser sturio e Huso huso. L'attività di risalita dal mare parrebbe raggiungere l'acme nel mese di maggio, e la deposizione delle uova tra giugno e luglio. Vengono deposte circa 40.000-55.000 uova per kg di peso corporeo della femmina. Le uova sono grigio-ardesia con riflessi bronzei e si schiudono dopo circa una settimana; gli avannotti alla nascita misurano poco meno di 1 cm. I maschi raggiungono la maturità sessuale intorno ai 7-11 anni, quando la loro taglia è di 70 cm, le femmine a 12-14 anni, quando raggiungono i 100 cm.[5] Molti aspetti della biologia riproduttiva della specie restano ancora oscuri.[4]
In cattività gli storioni cobice non riescono a riprodursi in maniera naturale: è necessario usare prodotti ormonali per indurre la femmina a produrre uova.[5]
Lo storione cobice è una specie opportunista: in ambiente fluviale il regime alimentare è a base di invertebrati acquatici (Gammaridi, Ditteri, Oligocheti) a cui gli esemplari maggiori aggiungono dei piccoli pesci. In ambiente marino la dieta consiste di Anellidi, Anfipodi, Gasteropodi, Bivalvi e, occasionalmente, di piccoli pesci. Dall'analisi del contenuto dell'apparato digerente di esemplari catturati, si è ipotizzata anche una alimentazione parzialmente a base di detriti organici (vegetali).[5]
Attualmente la pesca, sia sportiva che commerciale è rigorosamente vietata[8], ma nel passato lo storione cobice è stato ampiamente pescato per le sue carni di ottima qualità e per le sue dimensioni spesso importanti.[5]
La IUCN red list classifica Acipenser naccarii come specie in pericolo critico.[1]
Sono state individuate le seguenti minacce o fattori di rischio per la conservazione della specie in natura:
È di particolare rilievo la sua conservazione in quanto il suo areale è ridotto e le principali località di riproduzione si trovano in Italia. Attualmente si sta sperimentando, con buoni risultati, l'allevamento in ambiente protetto e la reimmissione in natura di giovani esemplari. Nel 2020, in occasione del World Fish Migration Day ( Giornata mondiale dei pesci migratori) sono stati liberati nei fiumi Savio e Reno oltre 1000 esemplari giovanili e subadulti.
La conservazione dello storione cobice è stata oggetto di diversi progetti LIFE finanziati dall’Unione europea, all’interno dei quali si è realizzata una imponente scala di risalita presso la Centrale idroelettrica di Isola Serafini di Monticelli d'Ongina, la più importante mai costruita in Italia, che permetterà di ripristinare le rotte di migrazione della fauna ittica per centinaia di chilometri dal mare Adriatico fino al Lago di Lugano. Grazie a questa scala di risalita, entrata in funzione nei primi mesi del 2017, vi sarà un importante effetto positivo per numerose specie migratrici a rischio di estinzione, e protette dall'UE, quali storione comune, storione cobice, anguilla, cheppia e, ipoteticamente, lo storione ladano, noto a livello internazionale con il nome russo di beluga, che necessitano di completare il loro ciclo vitale passando dalle acque dolci a quelle salate e viceversa. Ulteriori misure di salvaguardia riguardano l'ampliamento delle conoscenze sul ciclo biologico della specie per individuare i siti di riproduzione da tutelare particolarmente al fine di aumentarne la percentuale di sopravvivenza nella delicata fase embrionale.[5]
Gli acquari rivestono un ruolo fondamentale per garantire la conservazione in natura dello storione cobice e di altre specie ittiche minacciate di estinzione. Numerosi sono gli esemplari di questa specie conservati in acquari e in centri destinati alla riproduzione, tra cui:

De soort staat op de Rode Lijst van de IUCN als Kritiek, beoordelingsjaar 2009. De omvang van de populatie is volgens de IUCN dalend.[1]

Jesiotr adriatycki jest rybą drapieżną, żywi się przydennymi bezkręgowcami i małymi rybami. Jest rybą długowieczną. Biologia tego gatunku jest słabo poznana.
Gatunek poławiany dla mięsa. Ikra jesiotra adriatyckiego nie jest wykorzystywana do produkcji kawioru.

Glava jadranskega jesetraAdriatisk stör (Acipenser naccarii) är en art av släktet Acipenser som finns i Adriatiska havet men som troligtvis är så gott som utrotad i vilt tillstånd.
En avlång fisk, som alla störar utan fjäll men i stället klädd med flera, stora benplattor, och med en ryggfena som sitter långt bak.[3] Denna har 36 till 48 mjukstrålar, medan analfenan har 24 till 31. Nosen är ganska trubbig i spetsen och mycket bred, samt är försedd med 4 skäggtömmar placerade långt fram, ganska långt från munnen. Den har olivbrun rygg med ljusare sidor och vit buk. Som mest kan den bli 200 cm lång och väga 25 kg.[4]
Den adriatiska stören lever i havet nära flodmynningar. Den kan gå upp i flodernas sötvatten, men tros undvika rent saltvatten. Födan består av bottenlevande, ryggradslösa djur och småfisk. I maj till juli går den upp i stora, djupa floder för att leka över sand- och dybotten.[4]
Utbredningsområdet var ursprungligen Adriatiska havet och floder i Albanien, Kroatien, Grekland, Italien, Montenegro och Serbien. I dag är den troligtvis utrotad i vilt tillstånd utom möjligtvis några få i Pofloden. Dessa kan emellertid mycket väl vara odlade fiskar som släppts från fiskodlingar.[1]
Den adriatiska stören är klassificerad som akut hotad ("CR", underklassificering "A2bcde" samt "B2ab(i,ii,iii,iv,v)"). Man antar att den är utrotad i det vilda. Man har gjort framgångsrika försök med fiskodling i Italien, och även återinplanterat fiskar i Grekland, men man har inte lyckats få några av de uppfödda fiskarna att föröka sig i det fria. Osäkerhet råder i och för sig om dess närvaro i Spanien. Främsta orsaken till dess nedgång har varit överfiske, både lagligt och olagligt, och då främst av icke-könsmogna individer. Dessutom har vattenföroreningar och konkurrens från fiskar som malen också spelat in.[1]

В силу своей редкости хозяйственного значения этот осетр не имеет. Данные о его численности отсутствуют. В настоящее время предпринимаются попытки искусственного разведения.
